What do you think the government can do to prevent maid abuse?

Several maid abuse cases have been brought to light. Indonesia has stopped sending maids to the country, and cases such as Muntik Bani’s are still being heard by the court. But do you think the government is doing enough?

Regardless of the misbehavior of some maids, abuse by an employer cannot be tolerated. Employers who abuse employees in ways prohibited by law should be subject to sanctions.

Domestics who ill-treat children, steal or otherwise break the law are subject to punishment. An employer having any such concern should make a police report and discharge the individual concerned.

Two steps may help protect domestics, many of whom may be illegal immigrants:

1). Establishment of a code of conduct for employers of domestics (if the ordinary criminal law forbidding assault etc. is deemed insufficient)

2). Providing a mechanism whereby an ill-treated domestic may lodge a formal complaint and receive protection from reprisals.

How is the abuse of Freedom of Speech viewed in democratic Liberalism?

With regards to Nick Griffin’s scandalous and in my opinion not necessary appearance in BBC’s Question time I would like to know how the abuse of Freedom of Speech is dealt with in democratic Liberalism? Does it state any relation to this issue? I’d be happy to see some reference to evidence if you make a statement though. Thanks very much

I can’t give any actual evidence here, I can only share my own opinion.

I’m a student at Strathclyde University, and we had our Student Union AGM here yesterday evening. There was a motion put forward to have a no-platform policy for the BNP; that is, to outright ban them from campus and refuse to have any of them come to speak. I gave a speech against the policy, partly because of the freedom of speech issue, but mostly because I feel that their views should be heard in open forum so they can be demolished. After seeing Griffin get his @ss handed to him last night, I felt a lot more justified in that view.

Just for the extra info, the motion fell by 83 to 87 votes, with 79 to 87 upon a recount (it was a show of hands rather than written ballot, and a few people changed to ‘abstain’ rather than ‘yes’ on the recount).

Basically, while I often feel uneasy about it, I can’t help but support the freedom of speech, except in cases where there is a direct, explicit incitement to violence or prejudice.

Doinou: Pathetic. Given how your media was during the Bush era, claiming that democrats are trying to limit freedom of speech now is utterly ridiculous.

How should drug companies respond to people who abuse drugs?

Which approach makes more sense to you? Should drug companies make drugs that are highly toxic if abused (shot up, ect) to discourage their abuse, or should they make drugs that are safer even if abused, not because you want them to be abused but because you believe in harm reduction? If making the pills more toxic turns out to not dissuade everyone from abusing these drugs, it is ethical to be increasing the harm these people experience when that harm could be reduced?

Many binders and time release formulations are dangerous to people who shoot up. They shouldnt be shooting up anyway, but if we are further endangering their lives are we doing the right thing?

Another thing is additives like tylenol in Vocodin and Percocet. Despite what they tell you, the tyenol does not add significantly to the pain relief. Tylenol is good for minor aches and pains and it worthless for moderate to severe pain. It doesnt make enough of a difference. Its put in there however to make people sick if they take too much of the opiate. Too much tylenol will destroy your liver and is more toxic than the hydrocodone. Hydrocodone is dangerous if you take more than you have a tolerance for but is comparably non toxic if you use the right dosage. If you increase your dose of hydrocodone to tolerance, you will eventually destroy your liver with the tylenol rather than from the opiates. Many doctors are now switching to norco instead of vicodin because it contains less of the harmful tylenol which should never ever be shot…but it happens and people die.

So, should we err on the side of preventing drug abuse by making it scary by adding stuff that can kill you, or should we err on the side of compassion and harm reduction even when these people are breaking the law by abusing their medication?
"How about we manufacture drugs that do the optimum good for the patient and let the docs do what they do best"

That would be nice. However, the DEA breaths down the neck of doctors and drug companies in the name of trying to prevent drug abuse, and because of this many doctors are afraid to do their job and end up letter legitimate pain patients suffer. Drug companies are also pressured to cater to the DEAs wishes rather than just focus on making the best medications for pain they can make.

First off. They should crack down on pill docters cause that is most of the cause of these kinds of drugs.
Also i have alot of friends that get xanax from physcatrists. They go in there and say that there family doctor perscribes them this and they do not check.
Really they have done all that they can do for this. Making them illegal makes people want to do it more, thats just the way life works. My answer if its not affecting you
dont worry about it.

What are the odds of emotional/verbal abuse turning into physical abuse?

For an example, say that a 20 year old guy is already being emotionally & verbal abusive to a female friend that are just hanging out and getting to know each other and NOT even dating yet, what are the odds that it could turn into physical abuse?

P.S. I’m not in this situation anymore, I am just wondering.

The possibility is very high, first they abuse you in that way hoping you just kind of take it and do nothing about it. Then when they get comfortable about it, it will turn into physical abuse.

What is your opinion of women that allow husband to physically or mentally abuse her children?

Why would a mother just stand there allowing their child to suffer mental or physical abuse. What could possibly drive them to be heartless.

fear for themselves. not all people would risk their lives for others even their own children, the mother is just scared, not that i’m saying she is right not doing anything for her children but she would be worrying for herself. i would do something personally because that is who i am but you need to think for yourself if you should do anything.

Does substance abuse contribute positively,in any way,to the mystics literary and musical cultures?

often the biography of a great artist reveals his habit of substance abuse.
Can we say substance abuse has contributed to our cultural heritage?

Yes, I’m just guessing but I think about 80% of people with an artistic bent of some kind used controlled substances.Sometimes booze and tobacco aren’t enough. So I would say substance use has been a positive contribution to society as a whole. Some artists didn’t even attempt to hide its use.Salvidor Dali openly admitted he found lsd to be a help, and he was always seen in the better opium dens across Europe.Again yes substance use has contributed to our culture. You say substance abuse I say substance use.Its only abuse because the government says so.If people weren’t persecuted under stupid laws that turns honest citizens into criminals we’d all be better off.I guess I wandered off a little bit.

What are some good questions to interview someone regaurding animal abuse?

Ok i am interviewing people in my class with ten questions about animal abuse. Some i have now are:

Do you think animal abuse is wrong?

If you saw an animal being abused, what would you do?

If you knew a product you used was tested on animals, would you still use it?

and that is it so far. feel free to use any animal specifically or just all animals and give me as many as you can. Thanks so much! A few regaurding horses would be nice too.

If you want a more in depth sort of thing, ask them to define animal abuse in their own words.

Ask what is the difference between abuse and neglect.

Ask what symptoms they would look for to determine abuse and/or neglect.

Ask if they know the process for reporting neglect/abuse.

What is the blue flag Report abuse about-how do I get one?

I’ve noticed that every question and answer has a blue flag that says
Report Abuse. How do I get one? Mine is black.

Why would you want to get one?
I believe that the flags are like a button. If the question or answer violates YA in any way you would be able to click on it and send an report to YA. After I believe two reports the question or answer will be taken off the system and the questioner or answerer would have 10 points deducted. I think that the reason that the flag is black is because you don’t exactly want to report yourself. If you were to click on it nothing would happen so that i why it is black.
