can anyone give me a fact or statistic or even real life experience about child abuse?

Hi. I’ve took it upon myself to do some research for your question, and I’ve found some alarming statistics. If you want more, Google child abuse statistics…the research is literally endless, and gut wreching. I’m personally against child abuse, and it’s a very touchy and controvesial subject. So to help you out this is what I found:

* It’s a hidden epidemic. Over 3 MILLION reports of child abuse are made every year in the US; and this includes multiple children in the same household.

* Almost FIVE children die as the result of child abuse. More than three out of four are children under the age of four years old.

* A report of abuse is made EVERY 10 SECONDS.

* 90% of child sexual abuse victims knows the perpetrator in some way; 68% are abused by family members.

* Abuse comes from ALL socio-economic leverls, across ethnic/cultural lines, within all religions and all levels of education.

* 31% of women is US prisons were abused as children.

* Over 60% of people in rehab centers report being abused as children.

* About 30% of abused/neglected children will eventually abuse their own children…continuing the vicious cycle of abuse.

*About 80% of 21 year olds that were abused met criteria for at least ONE psychological disorder.

Then you have the consequences, even more statistics..the information is VAST and complex. Sadly with the econonic crisis, it’s getting worse however the fact remains is that it’s still a hidden epidemic. Why? Because of the red tape, the allegations, the different criteria and state laws, and just plain FEAR is what makes this so hard to fight. If you do your research, I think you’ll agree.

I’m fortunate that I haven’t suffered from child abuse, but I have been through spousal abuse. Regardless, abuse is abuse and I just don’t understand why it’s become such a ‘norm’ in society. Please take the time and see how sickening these statistics are. I hope this helps.

Why blame strangers when familiar adults are more likely to sexually abuse children?

In the past few months, I have become interested in the sex offender issue. What has struck me is all the studies and statistics point to adults in a child’s life (parents, step parents, relatives, babysitters, coaches, ministers and priests, teachers, etc.) are overwhelmingly and statistically responsible for child sexual abuse and abduction in the US, rather than the rare "stranger danger" situation so hyped and promoted. Yet whenever the media covers this issue, especially the sensationalistic coverage, it focuses on the stranger cases and rarely if ever discusses the familial abuse. I’ve come to the conclusion this is done for two reasons: the media is seeking circulation and ratings and to hype familial abuse is not sexy; and two, people reject the idea of familial abuse, preferring to believe stranger danger is more prevalent because it’s too horrible to believe most abuse is occurring within the family unit or closely related to the child.
Comments anyone?
I see that several of you said that familial abuse isn’t sensationalized because it would identify the victim. I don’t quite believe that is the reason why stranger danger is sensationalized. All of the kids who have been taken by strangers have been identified: the girl who was taken by Joseph Duncan, the Missouri kid, Jessica Lunsford, Polly Klaas. The list goes on and on. Yes, familial abuse is reported on, but RARELY does it become a national sensation as stranger abductions. Coverage is usually localized and quickly disappears and rarely becomes the subject matter for legislation. (A rarity is the Lacey and Connor bill, named for Lacey Peteron and her unborn son, who were killed by her husband.) I still think that the media covers – and inflates the risks – of stranger danger because it is "sexy", sensational and hits people emotionally. It’s also easy to explain that some stranger is a pervert than have to get into messy details about why family and others sexually abuse.

I think it also has to do with keeping anonymity within the family. It would be very hard to heal if the entire world knew your situation- especially if they knew both parties. Most of the time, in a "stranger" situation, there is a kidnapping, so there would be an initial missing-children report, amber alert, etc. Eventually, the details unfold and so does the story. Look at what happened with the boys from Missouri. Murder statistics follow the same pattern. You are more likely to be murdered by your spouse or lover before a complete stranger.

EDIT

I wouldn’t use the word "sexy." If you’re heading in that direction, I would think it would have to do with an uncontrollable variable. An outside force is something that parents have no control over. Parents choose their children’s caregivers and which relatives to visit, etc., so they feel they have some control in that situation because there is trust. We do not have any trust in strangers, and to think that someone outside the "circle of trust" could break in and take their child is frightening. The stranger did not know the child, so s/he could have abducted *any* child, which makes any child in any family a possible target. It hits harder with everyone could it could have happened to their children just as easily. The stranger, most of the time, knows no stereotypes or discriminations like wealth, race, religion. It’s all a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time- an opportunity. People can see a case of incest on the news and think "that wouldn’t happen in my family," but they can’t say that when it concerns an outside force in which they have no control over. The media will publicize anything that scares us because it sells. They will do stories on "Things in YOUR fridge that will KILL you!!!" That was a few years ago. Did anyone actually die from the items in their fridge????….. nope. But that teaser line got the station ratings. The media is known for distorting reality in order to sell. Education can dissolve this problem.

Dog Abuse and Child Abuse related?

If a person were to abuse their dog, is it likely they would abuse their future child/children?

I for sure do not abuse my dog, but am just curious if they are related. Are there any statistics or just general knowledge that this is directly related?

If they are related, does this mean caring for a dog can foreshadow how someone would care for their child?

Thanks for any responses

I don’t believe they are related at all. I believe a person will treat their child better than any animal. Now if they abused their own flesh and blood, that’s another story because if you abuse your own child, what makes anyone think you won’t abuse an animal too.

What are the child abuse statistics for the State Oregon?

How many reports of child abuse in the year 2006
How many fatalities due to child abuse in the year 2006
ages of abuse children

It does not appear that the statistics are available online for 2006, however, there are fairly extensive statistics available for previous years. In 2005 there were 55,114 total child abuse/neglect reports and 18 child abuse/neglect related fatalities.

How likely will an abuse survivor abuse their own kids?

Does anyone have any statistics on how child abuse survivors turn out? Do they get married? Are their marriages successful? Do they turn around and start abusing their own children more than the norm? etc?

Some offenders have been victims of childhood abuse themselves but they are no more likely to have been victims than anyone else in the community.

It is the fact that their victims are children that attracts offenders. It is the power they can wield over smaller vulnerable people that is their incentive.

For stats on offenders see second link.

Why so much bigotry over the Catholic child abuse scandal?

While a horrible situation indeed, why is it okay now to make jokes about priests abusing children, mock the Catholic Faith, and make fun of this Holy Institution. Statistics from the New York Times and Newsweek show that 4-5% of Catholic priests have EVER been accused of child abuse…the same % as Rabbis, Protestant ministers, Mormon elders, school teachers and Boy Scout leaders. BUT when a priest abuses a child it is FRONT page news, when a school teacher or minister does it is is in the middle of the paper. The question is simple…is this Anti-Catholicism? Bigotry? Hated?
Keep in mind, the shuffling of priests happened in VERY few diocese’s. it was not the majority by any means, yes Boston, Phx, and several others…but to say that other groups (atheists, Protestants etc) dealt with it while the Church did not does not stand up to statistics and scrutiny. (There are 4,000 dioceses…about 10 covered things up)
It does seem bigoted to blame the entire Church of 1 million priests, 2 million nuns, and 1 billion followers for the actions of a few priests. Thats like saying all black people are gang members or all Italians are Mafia.

Probably the reason Catholic priests tend to be singled out for ridicule and condemnation is because there are so many more Catholic clergy than in any other faith. So 5% equates to a much higher actual number of incidents. And the Catholic Church did itself and its members a terrible disservice by criminally trying to cover it all up and keep pedophile priests out there in positions to keep molesting.
I’m sorry, but the Catholic Church deserves every bit of mocking and criticism it gets for this issue.

what are the statistics of children who are mentally disturbed due to abuse?

I don’t know the exact statistics, but you might check out this website. There is no doubt that abuse causes serious problems especially in children. Many adults diagnosed with multiple personalities experienced some sort of abuse as a child. Abuse can also be linked to causing many cases of depression and other mental illnesses.

The exact statistics will probably be directly related to how you classify "mentally disturbed".

I’ll keep looking, but right now, I’m just getting off work, so this is a start.

Motorcycle group ‘Bikers Against Child Abuse’ under scrutiny. Many guilty of abuse themselves.?

Concern is growing as new light is being shed on a group made up largely of outlaws, felons, and societal miscreants that call themselves BACA or Bikers Against Child Abuse. Recent reports indicate that this group that professes to protect child abuse victims may be doing more harm than good. "It’s a self righteous enterprise" say’s Lynn Penaman, Director of Second Chances for Families. Lynn cites numerous incidents of violence directed at men that she feels deserve a second chance. "These bikers are harassing very redeemable men, as well as taking away the rights of a child to be reunited with their God given parent." Statistics indeed show that among the many other felonious activities of current and former bikers, domestic and child abuse are among the highest in the Nation within this group."They certainly aren’t qualified to be judging others or taking the law into their own hands." Lynn thinks their aggression is due to a desire to deliver themselves from the sins of their past.

considering bker gangs make and produce most of the meth, and many other drugs, which are killing our kids and ruining their lives, I dont think they have any business saying they are protecting kids.

How can I help prevent child abuse?

I don’t have much money to give, I’m fourteen and jobless. But I want to help! I feel that abuse is one of our nation’s greatest problems, even if statistics don’t show the same. I’ve wanted to help since I was about twelve…how do I? I know I can’t stop every child from being abused, but if I could just help one…that would just be miraculous in my book.

By the way, I didn’t know what section to ask this in, so if this seems irrelevant I apologize.

You can volunteer to respond to peer calls on your local children’s help phone.

I did that when I was your age. The organization will give you training and a list of contact numbers so that you can help the kids who call.
