Whats the difference between physical abuse vs mental abuse?

just asking

i was in a relationship a few years ago, and suffered both. but the one that has left the most lasting damage is the mental abuse. bruises heal, and cuts heal, but words, unfortunately, tend to continue going round in your head, and can ruin your self esteem and confidence. if somebody constantly calls you names and tells you that your no good, for example, you eventually end up believing it, and it can take a long time to pick yourself back up and start believing in yourself again.

When does corporal punishment cross into physical abuse?

I am wondering what is the difference between corporal punishment and abuse?

If used correctly corporal punishment can achieve the desired affect. It becomes abuse when it is used to often, or not for the right reasons.

Verbal and Physical Abuse from Patients Allowed By Mental Health Agency?

I work for a mental health agency in North Carolina and they allow for the verbal and physical abuse of their direct care staff (techs, nurses, therapists) from the patients that reside at this agency. By law, is this allowed? Is there any legal recourse (reporting to accrediting agencies JCAHO, Medicaid, Department of Human Health Services, LME, etc..) that such actions are being allowed by the administration at this agency?
Although it is "Frowned-Upon" by the agency, under confidentiality laws, mental health workers are allowed to report incidents of verbal threats and physical violence to law authorities…

There are a lot of variables that need to be addressed before this can get a thorough answer. Are the patients committed by the court or are they there voluntarily? Are the patients committing these acts stable, or are they experiencing symptoms of their illness (ie. command hallucinations)? Reporting to accrediting agencies won’t really do much good because of the situation. If they are accredited, it means their policies meet the accrediting agency’s standards, and that these policies are being followed. If the policies are not being followed, you can report this to the agencies.

It is within your rights to file a report with the police. However, because of the situation, the patient will more than likely not be liable due to insanity. If you want to start a paper trail to support a court ordered commitment, this may be in your best interest, and in the public’s best interest. If there is a pattern or if it is a brutal attack against a staff, a court can commit the person as mentally ill and dangerous (MI&D). I hope this answers your question. Good Luck.

How to help someone suffering emotional/physical abuse?

I have a friend who is 18 years old. Her mother is verbally and on at least one occasion, physically abusive. Is there any organization that exists to help teens who are 18 or older?

It depends on where you are, but the answer is most likely yes. If you’re still in high school and have a counselor available he/she would probably be the best person to refer you to somewhere. Any community service location or person (public library, court, police) should be able to find out or direct you to an appropriate organization.

I would be there for that person, too, if you can. Even a little support can make a ton of difference.

What is the punishment in Texas for physical abuse of a teenager?

Does anyone know or have any examples as to what the punishment is in Texas for leaving large bruises on arms, waist and thighs after forcefully slapping (7 times), kicking and hitting a 15 year old girl? The offender is her father. He has a clean criminal record and this is the first incident. CPS and County Sheriffs s Dept are involved and child is with mother (ex-wive of abuser) at this time. Waiting for him to be charged….
I should have asked – What could he be charged with? Sorry!

I pride myself on ALWAYS having the correct answer for any question. And that answer is, I don’t know. Nor does anyone else.

How can we even speculate on punishment if there isn’t even an actual charge yet?

how does one report mental, emotional, physical abuse going on at work? If I personally witnessed the full?

extent of what goes on, but I can’t work 16 hours a day, but I do hear about everything that goes on. It is not suppost to be allowed, but it is being allowed to continue and even escalate. Can I put a hidden camera at work or a tape recorder? Should everything be documented and dated? It is a place where retarded folks live and the ones doing the abuse are the favorite of the bosses.

By law when you work with handicapped or children or elderly you are required to report it to the authorities. These people can’t stick up for themselves. You have to help them. It may not be an easy thing to do, but it has to be done.

What are some long term effects from physical abuse?

years of physical and emotional abuse?

I am going to be completely honest with you. Blunt, so to speak. Don’t be offended! But it depends on the person you are talking about. People with long term abuse generally do one of a couple things.
1. They cannot break free of it, it bothers them horribly, can cause depression and anxiety disorders. Some case, anti-social behaviors.
2. (in my case and some other people I know) They get over it, learn from it, and become amazingly happy people. They have dealt with the emotions and memories and have "let them go" so to speak.
3. Then there is the other category of people who use their pasts as an excuse or scapegoat for their present behavior. They will use it for anything. Such as, why they have anger issues, or why they lash out or why they are depressed, or this is why their life sucks. On and on and on. These are the people who need help the most, but not from their loved ones. They need Therapy. The loved ones in these cases usually act as enablers for their behaviors. They give these people sympathy, and feel sorry for them, and generally let the bad behaviors slide.

I hope this has been helpful to you.
