Thus, the next time we had an overnight flight from the East Coast to Europe, I knew my jet lag needed to be handled differently. I put myself on a European time zone sleeping and eating schedule the day before we left and resisted the temptation to accept a glass of wine on the plane. I intentionally planned a very low-key itinerary for the morning we landed (lingering at a café, people-watching from a park bench, etc.) so I’d be able to stay awake until it was actually time for bed. The preparation ensured a much less dramatic transition to the new time zone!
